Sendai to Sakata

On July 25, 2012 we left Sendai in Myagi prefecture and took slow trains across Honshu through the mountains to the city of Sakata in Yamagata (yama is mountain) prefecture. The town of Uzen-Komatsu in Yamagata is Yayoi's home town. There are many beautiful views of the ocean in Japan, but I believe Yayoi and I are most awed by the beauty of Japanese mountains. I hesitate to take photographs through train windows, but in these circumstances I had to try. One of the most notable things we observed was the presence of white mountain lilies. These are supposedly wild, but their size makes this incredible. The lilies are white with yellow strips down the centre of each petal.
Thanks to advice from friends Etchan in Shizuoka and Kazuko in Winnipeg we purchased train tickets that allowed unlimited travel on five independent days. The tickets are to encourage 18 year olds to travel. I guess we look that young. We had to use slow trains, not express trains and definitely not the Shinkansen in one of the photographs on Picasa.
